The Story Behind Pretty Patti’s Cheesecakes

Tragically, Patti’s life was cut short at the age of 40 when she was murdered by her boyfriend, a former hero police officer in Vancouver, on March 25, 1996. The news reached us on my sister Nicoline’s 19th birthday, turning what should have been a joyous annual occasion into a bittersweet memory for our family.

On March 25th, 2021, the 25th anniversary of our mother’s death, Nicoline and I jointly decided that we would include Mom in our celebration.  It has been inspiring and fun to celebrate with others!  Each year, we strive to do something unique and special.

Baking was more than a hobby for our mother—it was a source of joy. As a young boy, some of my fondest memories are of being in the kitchen with her, creating Christmas treats and birthday cakes. Mom had a special way of making us feel involved, always sharing spoonful samples that made me more eager to help!

Our beloved mother, Patricia Grace Ducharme, was affectionately known as “Pretty Patti” for her genuine smile, bubbly personality, and kindness that she extended to everyone she met. Sadly, Patti died, but through this Cheesecake Story, we managed to transform a sad story into a beautiful celebration of community, positivity, and sharing her cheesecakes with you!

In March 2021, a dear friend, Brenda Morrison from Simon Fraser University, hosted an online memorial Zoom conference call with over 80 people who participated, some were just learning who our mother was for the first time! We sang, laughed, cried, and shared music, poetry, and memories of who Pretty Patti was to each of us. It was therapeutic and fun!

Event Memories & Quotes (From March, 2021 Event)

An Evening of Sharing Beautiful Memories and Love of Patricia Grace Ducharme (Patti)

About the Event:
March 2021 marks the 25th anniversary since losing Patti.
We will be sharing all the beautiful memories and love that Patti has given us!  This is also an opportunity to recognize and bring together all those who love and miss Patti (siblings, friends, nieces, nephews, step siblings, etc.).
Please feel free to come with a story; either a funny one, a heartfelt one, or both.  You are welcome to bring an item to visually share (just hold up to your screen), or you can attend to just witness and observe.  Your presence and attendance is so appreciated!

About the Facilitator:
Brenda Morrison is the Director of the Centre for Restorative Justice and an Associate Professor in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University. She is a social psychologist with teaching, research and field experience in outdoor education, governance and justice. She completed her PhD at the Australian National University.

Who is Invited:
This is an open invitation to all of Patti’s relations…whether you knew her, you know someone who knew her, or you are curious what made Patti so special!  *Also, please feel free to share this invite with your family, friends or someone who may benefit from attending.
Patricia Grace Ducharme (Patti) was born in Vancouver on December 18, 1955 to Marion and Ed with siblings: Lorraine, Doug and Teresa.  She was married to Paul Ducharme for 23 years and was a loving Mom to her four children: Nicoline, Jason, Christopher and Leanna, and a half-son, Jeremy.  Her loving nature and kindness was appreciated by all who knew her; she had a loving connection to everyone hshe knew including her immediate and extended relatives, family, friends and co-workers.
Sadly, Patti was tragically taken from us on March 22nd, 1996.  March 25th is the day she was discovered and the day we found out.  After being incarcerated for 25 years this month, Brock continues to serve time in prison for his lack of attachment to his crimes, and his denial state.
Our family has found great strength and healing through the closeness of each other and in honoring our grief and communicating her love and sharing our memories.  This is the first time we have held a public event in Patti’s honor, and March 28 is the Libra Full Moon which represents healing energy.

Thank you for the invite to hear all these stories. My parents shared how they curled with Paul and Patti while living in Devon and I always love to say that Leanna and I have been friends since “before we were born”. My mom has shared about going to the strippers with Patti at the Key West Inn in Devon and my only memory, which is silly, is being picked up by Patti at daycare and going to their home for a sleepover. As Christina had said, Leanna has always had a positive aura about her the whole 35 years I have known her and I have always been welcomed by the whole family which I can see by all these beautiful stories has been passed along from their beautiful mother. Love you!! ~Michelle

I am not aware of commemorations quite like this and think it is a lovely idea. I have been to a couple of Zoom funeral services lately and think how lucky we are to be able to gather to mark these events. Your celebration takes it to another level. I’m certain it would have been an amazing evening.  ~Lorna

In March 2022, we celebrated by sharing something Patti loved; her favorite cheesecake recipe! One of my regular clients and friends suggested the idea of celebrating friendship over cheesecake, so Enrico Winery hosted a Cheesecake Party at the Vineyard with live music and over 100 friends.

In March 2023, Nicoline and I took a road trip together on her birthday to say our final farewells to our grandmother before her passing. Though we did not do a public event this year, I have produced a photography album of last year’s cheesecake party.

In March 2024, I returned to Galiano Mountain on Galiano Island with my friend, Zoe, where 20 family members gathered in 2008 to spread our mother’s ashes. We filmed a series of scenery and interviews that are part of a short documentary capturing this important milestone. For those who have never been to Galiano or may not be able to make the climb, the video is coming soon!

In March 2025, all five of my father’s children (me and my two brothers and two sisters) reunited in the Okanagan for a family gathering. In June, 2024, our father was diagnosed with bladder cancer that has quickly spread through his body. So, during our father’s chemotherapy treatments, we chanced to all meet up on our the traditional anniversary week. This year has a different meaning; not knowing how much longer we may have with our Dad, this is a year dedicated to reminiscing, honoring and being in gratitude with him and each other celebrating the 75 years of his birthday in May, 2025.
